Branding consultants across Australia have declared "a historic day" after Melbourne agency Jacaranda unveiled a new identity completely devoid of the words Real Estate, Realty, Property or Property Group in its name.
The announcement marks what experts are calling a rare hallmark of an agency trusting that prospective vendors and investors might infer the business sells and manages property from the giant FOR SALE sign standing in front of one.
Agency owner Jackie Samuels said the decision initially caused concern among colleagues within their boutique agency team. "There were genuine fears that came up, like, what if people thought we sold gardening supplies? Because you never know, right?”.
"But once we put the logo on a For Sale board in front of a house, the context seemed to do most of the heavy lifting."
The name Jacaranda was developed by local real estate branding specialist Gemma Sainsbury, drawing inspiration from Jackie's name, Australia's iconic verandah culture, but most evidently, the jacaranda trees that flood the agency's local suburbs with purple blooms each spring that also became the brand’s distinctive colour scheme.
"It was obvious we didn't need to explain what the business does in the name and the whole concept tied in perfectly," Sainsbury said. “Especially in real estate, people don't drive past a For Sale board and think, 'Beautiful sign... shame I've got absolutely no idea what industry this belongs to.'"
Industry observers say real estate remains one of the few professions where nearly every customer interaction already screams the category. As property listings. Open homes. Window displays. Auction flags. Sold stickers. Drone videos. Agents standing in front of houses or pointing enthusiastically at kitchens. They all point to industry associations the majority of consumers already understand.
"There aren't too many accidental interpretations," Sainsbury explained. “Have you ever walked into a real estate office thinking it was a dentist?”
Ms Sainsbury, believes the will hopefully further encourage more agencies to build memorable brands rather than descriptive business names. “This makes the brand work for the business just the same as the big real estate franchise agencies do in this country without the need for superfluous industry title descriptors”.
“Because if your entire visual identity appears on houses, sold signs, property portals and social media content full of house pictures and videos,” she said, "you've probably earned the right to call yourself something people might actually remember."
Since the rebrand unveiling, a handful of competing agencies had reached out to Sainsbury, reportedly considering similar rebrands before concluding they weren't quite ready to let go of ‘Property Solutions Realty Group Estate Partners’ just yet.
