After 13 years of waiting, countless delays and enough "we got X before GTA 6" memes to fill the internet twice over, Rockstar Games has finally given the world an extended look at Grand Theft Auto 6. And apparently, throwing an alleged billion-dollar-plus budget at a video game buys you quite a lot of pixels.
The 27-minute Netflix showcase, captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5, offered the clearest look yet at Vice City and the wider fictional state of Leonida, complete with packed streets, beaches, wildlife, nightclubs, car culture, racing and enough painstaking environmental detail to suggest several Rockstar employees haven't seen their families since 2018.
GTA 6 footage is now so realistic Florida residents are reportedly demanding royalties. Palm trees sway. Sweat glistens. Cars reflect their surroundings. NPCs appear to have entire lives. At several points it becomes genuinely difficult to tell whether you're watching gameplay or footage captured by a Florida local moments before something involving an alligator makes the evening news.
The extended look also revealed where much of that enormous development budget may have gone, as many male gamers who live in their mothers' basements immediately began conducting extremely thorough analysis of Lucia's character model.
Lost amongst all the pixel counting is something genuinely significant. Rockstar is treating a video game launch less like software marketing and more like the release of a major entertainment property. By debuting this extended showecase of gameplay on Netflix before its own channels is a remarkable flex for a franchise whose pent up reveals have become cultural events in their own right.
And perhaps that's the most ridiculous part. After more than a decade of anticipation, Rockstar somehow needed to make something capable of living up to expectations that had become almost impossible to satisfy.
Judging by what they've shown, they may have actually pulled it off and $1 billion later, GTA 6 appears to have invented Florida.
